Getting a swing Albie can read.
Most of what goes wrong is the camera, not the swing. This page fixes the camera.
Set it up like this
- Phone on a tripod, three or four steps away, about hip height. Point it straight at you, not tilted down. Albie shows a level reading on the first screen so you can check.
- Stand facing it, chest on. Not down the target line, not at an angle. Albie reads your swing from the front.
- Fill the frame, head to feet. Aim for about 60% of the frame height. Further away than that and there is not enough of you to measure.
- Film one swing, start to finish. Start recording before you take the club back and stop after the finish.
When Albie says it could not read a clip
Albie refuses a clip rather than guessing at it. A wrong fix is worse than no fix, so it says what it could not do and what to change.
“Albie reads your swing from the front”
The camera was down the line, or at an angle. Move it round so it faces your chest and film again. This is the one setup mistake that cannot be worked around: every measurement Albie takes assumes a face-on view.
“That clip is flipped left to right”
Selfie cameras mirror by default on plenty of phones, and a mirrored clip looks perfectly normal to the person who filmed it. Film with the rear camera, or turn off your camera's mirror setting, and try again.
“You're a little far away”
Move the camera closer, or yourself further from the background, until you fill most of the frame from head to feet. Detail that is not in the frame cannot be recovered afterwards.
“No swing in that one”
Nothing moved fast enough to be a swing. Record again and catch the whole motion, start to finish, rather than the setup or the finish alone.
“We couldn't pick you out of that one”
Usually the light or the background. Try again with your whole body in the shot, the phone held still, and something behind you that is not the same color as what you are wearing.
“This phone can't film from inside Albie”
Some devices do not hand the camera over. Film with your normal camera app and use Import a clip instead. Everything after that is identical.
Questions
Why only one fix?
Because a list of faults is a list of things not to practice. Albie measures the whole swing, then gives you the single change that matters most right now. Fix it, film another swing, and it tells you what is next.
Does Albie keep my swings?
The video is deleted from your phone as soon as it has been read, and it is never uploaded. The measurements stay on the phone, and you can export them from settings. See privacy for the full account.
Does it work left-handed?
Yes. Settings asks once whether you swing right or left-handed, and every fix names the correct side of your body afterwards.
Can I use it indoors, or into a net?
Yes, as long as there is room to stand back three or four steps and enough light to see you clearly. Albie never looks at the ball or where it went.
Does this replace time with a pro?
No, and it is not built to be. Albie is a practice companion: it reads one swing and gives you one thing to take into the next one. Time with a PGA professional does things no phone can.
What do I need to run it?
iPhone on iOS 15 or later, or an Android phone on Android 9 or later. Something to stand the phone on, a few steps of space, and somewhere to swing.

If a clip was refused, the message it gave you is the most useful thing you can include. Do not send the video: it is deleted on your phone and we would rather it stayed that way.
